BMGIS Privacy Policy

BMGIS is a community-supported benchmark mapping app that helps users locate and update BM reference points. This policy explains what data BMGIS collects, how it is used, and how users can request account deletion.

Community submissions are also governed by the BMGIS Terms of Use.

1. Information we collect

BMGIS may collect the following information when you use the app:

Account information such as email address and display name.
Location information captured when you submit or update a BM.
Photos, comments, condition reports, and community-submitted BM coordinates.
Votes and reports submitted on community-updated BM data.
Account deletion requests and content reporting requests.
Anonymous usage events such as app opens, screen views, searches, GPS check success, map taps, and offline update saves.

2. How we use the information

BMGIS uses this information to:

Authenticate users and maintain their session.
Allow users to submit benchmark updates, photos, comments, and field observations.
Display community-updated BM information publicly inside the app.
Support community voting and reporting of incorrect or inappropriate content.
Handle support, moderation, and account deletion requests.
Understand anonymous app usage so we can improve reliability and community coverage without requiring users to log in.

3. Public community submissions

BM updates submitted by users may become publicly visible in the app. This can include submitted coordinates, photos, comments, benchmark condition, and related community update details.

JUPEM source benchmark data remains separate from community-submitted updates.

Benchmark data is sourced from Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM) Open Data, used under Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY). BMGIS is an independent field utility developed for surveyors and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official app of JUPEM or the Government of Malaysia.

4. Location data

The app uses device location to help users find nearby BM points and to support field submissions and updates. Location is only used as part of the app’s BM mapping and update workflow.

Anonymous usage events do not include raw GPS coordinates or search text. GPS checks are recorded only as success or failure with a broad accuracy bucket.

5. Content moderation

Users can report community content such as photos, coordinates, or comments if they believe the content is wrong, sexual, abusive, inappropriate, or spam. Users can also block other users from the community update view. Reported content may be reviewed and acted on.

6. Data sharing

BMGIS does not sell personal data. Community benchmark updates are shown publicly inside the app to support collaborative field verification.

7. Account deletion

Users can request account deletion from the Account screen inside the BMGIS app. For more information, see the Account Deletion page.

8. Data retention

We may retain account, submission, moderation, and operational records for a reasonable period as needed to operate the service, review reports, and process deletion requests.
